Rosalie's POV The next hour found me sitting still and watching the wolf with me. I could not think of what to do. I most possibly was not thinking at all as I watched it. All I could really think of was some tale about a boy raised by wolves I had seen somewhere—What was the name again… Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. One of the room’s windows was wide open, the two curtains parted down the centre to show a large, full, silvery moon waiting in the sky and watching me in the corner of the room, while the wolf simply existed, showing no signs that it had anything to do with Caleb.

She nodded and asked him about his mission. She really wasn't expecting for Yman to acquire such a quest. After all, rats were a very hated pest. They were gross and scary. Yeah, they have fluffy fur, but they were not cute to pet. Well, depending on rats though. Since there were rats also that looks cute like a highbred hamster. Highbred hamsters intentionally bred for petting purposes. But the thing was, Yman took the quest about the Evil Rats! Those Evil Rats were hideous looking with the body as big as normal pigs. And their mouths were dripping with greenish saliva that contains poison. And those pointed teeth outside its mouth, well, scary and gross when it bites you.

There were neat, small sticky notes poking out from almost every single chapter. I opened to the first marked page. In Maverick’s handwriting, there was a note that read: “Does page 14 mean the data moves faster if you shorten the string? Let me know if I got that right.” I stared at the note, my heart feeling so light that I felt like a teenager again. I looked up at him, completely stunned. "Maverick... did you buy a coding textbook?"

I needed answers, and I didn’t know which way to turn, which meant I was more confused than before I read the books. I gave up reading books that sent me into fits of panic. I also stopped checking out werewolves online because that was worse than reading the books. Around my shifts in Jill’s restaurant, I took to spending my evenings running to the forest and learning about the wolf inside of me. Chai became my best friend, and she taught me a lot in a short amount of time. However, I know that I’m naïve, and I still have much to learn. Chai told me that there are other’s like me out there, but not to go looking. If I did that, I could be attacked by rogues, who were usually evil.

The air pulsated with the scent of fur and blood, an olfactory battleground where survival teetered on the edge of chaos. The encounter unfolded in a crescendo of ferocity, each movement etched in the shadows of the sewer's forgotten corridors. Finally, with a powerful swipe, I incapacitated the alpha rat, its form crumpling to the ground. The remaining horde, momentarily subdued, retreated into the gloom, their haunting squeaks fading into the depths.

The little black cat curled up in her lap as usual. "Tonight we find out the real skinny on this, kitty," she murmured as she opened the heavy book to the page she had marked. "I don't even know what I'm looking for any more but I hope I find it soon." She opened the book to the place she'd marked, two pages of hand-drawn sketches. One of the drawings especially caught her eye. The face of the wolf looked almost human and she had the bizarre feeling the animal was staring out at her from the page.

The near audible gasp from Elias made me think I had misspoke. My mate? I heard him nearly on the edge of tears in my mind. No, she's just saying it, don't read too much into it. I guess my mind reading was coming back now. If there was some way I could figure out why it was turning off and on sporadically, I would really appreciate it! I cursed silently to Inari. Hugo apparently didn't care what was happening mentally as he scoffed “So what are you then? You were able to sneak into pack territory on the full moon and there's a rumor you were seen turning into a small black animal.”

I had to keep studying—this was the only way I could avoid his gaze and his presence. After a few more pages, my eyes drifted to the large bookshelf along the living room wall. It was filled with thick volumes, most in Latin or old English. Slowly, I stood and approached it. My fingers brushed over a spine, trying to read the titles. Anatomi Licanthropica, Genealogy of Packs, Mutatio Lupus. I pulled one out, nearly choking when I saw its contents—pages full of strange illustrations: skeletal figures half-transformed into wolves, notes on dual circulatory systems, and countless terms unfamiliar to me.
