How can he still talk?” “I’m afraid that isn’t an ordinary Blood Shura,” Alex said. “It may be a different kind, some mutation of some sort or something.” Dorothy nodded. “So, it’s a freak.” King Shura was furious when he heard this. “Who are you calling a freak? Woman, you have angered me. I am the most handsome man in the Shura Tribe. An ugly woman like you is not worthy of looking at me. I will gouge your eyes out.”

We needed the intel anyway. “So, how’d everything go?” Nathan asked, casually raising the bet. I tossed in my chips. Tomas folded with a scowl. “Man, it was a fucking shit show. The Riding Hoods rustled up some asanbosam—closest thing to real-life vampires you’ll ever see. Picture a bare-ass monkey with huge claws and bigger teeth. They turned them loose on an entire village. Killed everyone—men, women, kids. Even the pets. Drained fucking dry.”

I held back a giggle at the thought. She had been most upset when she came round, threatening to place a curse on my first born child if I should so much as raise a finger to her again. As much as I had no intention of having a child at the current time, I wasn’t about to try my luck. And so, I allowed her to do what she needed to, trying to keep as much distance as I could, the smell of hemlock and nightshade rolling off of her in waves and turning my stomach.
