We both jumped, startled, to see a stern-looking librarian peering at us over a towering stack of books. “Ahem,” she cleared her throat pointedly. “No… public displays of affection are permitted in the Royal Library.” My cheeks flushed scarlet as Adrian threw me a sheepish grin. “Sorry, ma’am,” he mumbled. The librarian, however, didn’t seem entirely displeased. A hint of a smile played on her lips. “Just… keep it professional in here, alright?” she said, her voice softening slightly. With a final warning glance, she retreated back into the labyrinthine stacks of books. We both burst into laughter, the tension melting away completely.

Internally, her senses were sharp, alert, and scanning. Her phone vibrated once in her palm. Bobby: Aisle seven. No punctuation. Typical Bobby. Aurora didn’t respond. She slipped the phone back into her bag and walked toward the counter instead. The librarian, a woman in her late forties with wire-frame glasses and a practiced, polite smile, looked up as Aurora approached. “Good afternoon,” the woman said softly. “Hi,” Aurora replied, lowering her voice instinctively. “I’m here to borrow a book.”

Trying to look less confused than I was, I walked over to the main desk. A librarian stood there—early thirties maybe, sharp glasses, smart eyes. Her name tag said Cassandra.

In my 5 years of working as a librarian,I never knew how exciting it was to come to work,for the past two months,a cute guy had been coming into the library flirting with me,winking at me and recently leaving me naughty letters whenever he returns a book. Her name was Claudia, and she had been in the library for as long as anyone could remember. Claudia’s book held more than the location of library books; it was said to hold every answer imaginable. The volume was magic; so much so that it was a part of the woman’s soul, and only she could read its pages. To every other eye, it was completely and utterly blank.

The woman had a look on her face that said, 'figures'. The librarian's desk contained the basic things any official desk would have. A computer, a mug for various colours of pen, stack of clipboards with a pen clipped at the top. Things that personalized her table were a small pot of artificial Cactus and framed photograph, its back turned to Isabelle so she couldn't make out what it contained. She picked up the first clipboard and handed it to Isabelle. "Fill it out," she told her. "What's your name?" Isabelle collected the clipboard. "Isabelle."

Kohen asked me instead of answering my question. “Man the library? Record the books?
