The guard’s gun hit the floor as my fist connected with his temple, and he crumpled. “This way!” I shouted, catching the faint scent of wolves on the air. My chest tightened at the thought of what we’d find. Silas slammed through the next door, and the sight before us turned my stomach. Rows upon rows of cages. Steel and glass. And inside— Werewolves. Their faces were gaunt, their bodies battered, some barely conscious. The stench of blood and fear was suffocating. Silas didn’t hesitate, his voice cutting through the sounds.

Riley stepped in front of me like a shield. "Get this through your head, Kenneth—Alyssa will never like you again!" Kenneth staggered up, wiping the blood off his split lip. His eyes locked on mine, and a slow, creepy smile crept across his face. "Alyssa, you will like me." Not in this lifetime. I wasn't just done with him—I was going to destroy him. I asked, my voice a whisper. "The Valentis first," he confirmed. His hands came around my waist, pulling me tighter against him. I could feel the heat radiating off him, a fierce, living warmth that defied the damp cold of the basement. "They’re the ones who sent the Hounds to the Yard. They’re the ones who think they can inherit what we burned."

Iron chains and torture devices hung on the walls. My wrists and ankles were shackled in icy chains. The chill bit deep into my bones, cutting my skin and drawing blood. At that moment, Sophia walked in with a small bag of purple wolfsbane powder. Her lips twisted into a cruel grin as she said, "Last chance. Sever the mate bond and leave the Shadow pack." Having said that, she scattered the powder over my wounds. Pain tore through me, and I screamed, my mouth tasting of blood. "Never!" I spat blood on her face. "Even if I rot here and turn to ash, I'll never let you have your way!"

The rusted hinges shrieked in protest. The interior hit my senses like a physical wall. The air smelled of stale, spilled beer, cheap tobacco smoke, and the pungent, musky odor of wet dog fur. Dim, flickering fluorescent tubes cast a sickly yellow glow over the crowded room. Dozens of scarred, hardened rogues stopped drinking and turned their hostile glares toward the entrance, their hands drifting toward the concealed weapons hidden beneath their leather jackets.
