“Hellhounds carry hell’s own fire in their blood.” He said it plainly, an old creature himself laying out old facts. “It is not a gift the way your lightning is a gift. It is a furnace, and a furnace must be fed and banked and tended, and the only thing that tames hell’s fire is hell’s fire. In the old days, most of them never learned how. They burned bright and they burned young, and the histories are full of hellhounds who were consumed by the very thing that made them, from the inside, all at once.”
