How Could I Possibly Be Inconspicuous Novels & Stories

I chuckled It's true, I hardly go out. And if I go out then it's those places I'm not likely to get attention. Places where everyone minds their businesses. And usually, I'm always behind tinted windows so if I driving by places where people are, I can't get easily spotted.

Just enough to remain forgettable. That was when I heard it. A mark. The conversation immediately caught my attention. I kept walking. Never looking directly at them. Never drawing attention. Years of experience made it easy. The trick wasn’t avoiding attention. The trick was appearing uninterested. My pulse accelerated slightly. A mark? Huh. Before reaching the stairs, I adjusted my route and passed behind the booth one final time.

He won’t be taking me unaware again. He doesn’t get to drive me from this city, a city that was once my dream. I will not allow him to win this round when the day breaks. One of them literally spun in his seat just to keep watching me walk. It was insane. I’d been invisible here for years. You could’ve placed me in front of their table naked before, and no one would’ve looked twice. Now, all of a sudden, I was the highlight of their day? Who am I?

A vendor shouts about coffee that smells burnt even from here. I merge into the flow without stopping. Announcements echo, half of them impossible to understand. I keep my eyes moving, not searching, just aware. I spot two men who might be nothing. Or might be something. Either way, I do not look again. I step into a line for tickets I may not buy, stand there long enough to be forgettable, then drift away toward the benches. I sit, then stand. I shift my bag to the other shoulder. This is how you disappear. Not by running, but by becoming ordinary.

But if that person was still alive, well, his cover would definitely fail this time because that person would not hesitate to blow his cover in a matter of minutes. So he had to be careful, to be inconspicuous. It was the reason why he decided to wear sunglasses or a face mask was clearly an impossibility for him to do when he entered the bar, so the only option he could choose was to find a seat in the corner of the bar room with low lighting. He had to avoid himself as much as possible to be in the spotlight and get the attention of the people there.

It’s the kind of thing people never notice about themselves, but it’s a giveaway. So I changed my posture deliberately. I didn’t know how I usually walked, but I knew that if I consciously crafted a new walking pattern, it would differ from my natural gait. That would help mask my identity on camera. Even after I had done this, I avoided every angle that I knew had CCTV. I walked out of the department without touching anyone’s desk or leaving a trace. I walked through the hallway and headed for the lift area. When I got to the lift, I paused. “I can’t use this,” I muttered under my breath.

I need to make them feel like I don’t exist. I don’t have the strength to walk or to stand, but I was not giving up. Which is why I started to crawl. I crawled to the nearest hiding spot I could find. The nearest place where no one would ever think I would go. I need to become a chameleon, blending among the things that surround me, making it hard for them to find me. Seeing my new hiding place, I just know that I made the right decision. But seeing that the clothes that I was currently wearing were too flashy from my hiding spot, I decided to take them off. I need to become a chameleon. I need to blend and not be seen.

I closed my eyes as she began to walk closer by the second. My hand was gone from sight, I noticed. I was invisible, it worked and she didn't find me. I began to crawl, causing commotion amid the feet of lost dancers. They could not find the obstruction knocking into them with every passing moment. I refused to stand up. It would be suspicious to mere eyes to find a floating phone. I needed a temporary way to get rid of my phone so I could be comfortable whilst being invisible. This was not okay. I had lost track of Grace by now. I lay low on the floor hoping none of the girls would walk into me.
