I saw him leaning against his car, a cigarette dangling from his fingers, as he glanced around the docks.
I barely had time to greet him before he asked, “How’s Hugh?”
My jaw tightened. “He’s dead.”
For a moment, Rex just stared at me, his cigarette burning between his fingers. Then, quietly, he muttered, “Shit.”
I didn’t respond.
“I’m sorry,” he said after a moment.
“It’s fine.” The words felt hollow.
There was a beat of silence before I got straight to the point.
“I need your help.”
Rex exhaled a slow stream of smoke. “With what?”
