The liquid pools in the shallow carvings etched into the stone, filling the grooves like veins. It shines faintly in the moonlight, an otherworldly light that seems to pulse in time with my racing heart. It disappears instantly, absorbed like water in parched soil. Dixie leans forward, checks it and sees that nothing is happening.
Seconds pass.
Nothing.
“Trix,” she whispes, not looking up, “what if we’re too late?”
My response is quick, firm. “We’re not. Do it, Dix.”
