I looked at the father and daughter, puzzled, or perhaps wondering if they were playing a prank on me. “Open it, Nathalie.” I took a deep breath then opened the paper. Seeing what was on the paper, I stopped short, completely surprised. It was a vibrant drawing. A woman and a man with round heads, triangular bodies, and stick-like arms and legs. In the space between the woman and the man was a child, all three stick figures had their hands connected. On the other side was a drawing of a large house, its roof a triangle and the rest of the house a square.

“I missed you too, sweetheart,” He kissed her on the forehead, the familiar warmth of her skin almost undoing him completely. Tessa grabbed his hand, tugging at it with excitement. “Come look! I made something.” Kris let her pull him across the room, each step feeling like a lead weight. She led him to the floor where a pencil drawing lay on a sheet of paper. Kris sat down beside her, feeling numb as he looked at the drawing. It was simple—just three stick people. A man, a woman, and a little girl in between them holding both of their hands.

Everyone had left, but I was still sitting there, staring at the blank paper in front of me. “What are you hiding?” I whispered to myself. My hand moved slowly. I picked up the pencil. And then… I started drawing. Not thinking. Not planning. Just… feeling. A house. A big one. Cold. Empty. A woman standing outside it. Small. Alone. And behind the window… a man. Far away. Watching… but not reaching. My breath became uneven. I didn’t even notice the tears until one dropped on the paper. “Why does it still hurt?” I whispered.

A handful of graphite pens. My fingers curl around the paper. The memory hits me like a physical blow to the solar plexus. The shoe designs. The factory layouts. The stitches. Dana took out the blade cutters and handed it to Kim and Jas “Start cutting.” She pointed towards Frank and Sarah’s outline. “Next us!” Lara shouted excitedly.

ALICE I flipped through the pages. The pencil in my hand snapped as my grip on it tighten. I did not bother getting myself another one. I can still draw using what's left of this five inch pencil. This flimsy little thing... is already enough. Just like his lingering image in my brain...is enough to draw his sketch.
