I then flopped on the red beddings on my bed, my head at the foot. I nimbly pulled a piece of paper from the pile. My breath caught when I saw it, as it always did. I ran my fingers across the page, hoping to feel all the curves and edges that were drawn. But I didn't. They weren't real. It was just a drawing. I picked up a gray pencil and added something to the picture. My hand moved swiftly across the page. I then picked up a yellow pencil crayon and added the details. I smiled at it.

I hate lying to her, I just felt like screaming. **** I was thinking of something else to focus on because this pain was too much. Then my eyes landed on a scrap of paper and a pencil I found in one of the drawers. I took it and sat at the small desk and began sketching. At first, the lines were aimless, because my mind did not focus. But slowly, the shapes began to make sense. I was drawing an outline of my mum’s face, starting with the crinkles around her eyes when she did her signature smile. My pencil moved faster, I started flowing with the rhythm, and memories started pouring out onto the paper.

First she sharpened the pencil, and then she settled down on the chair by her study table, opening the book and flipping through it until she found a blank page, and then she placed the tip of the pencil on the book and started to draw. Her hands first moved slowly as it sketched but it soon started to move so fast as she added some shadings to some areas and curves on some others. Her short hair was messed up and unnecessarily filled with pins. She hummed, tapping her chin thoughtfully with her head tilted to the side to observe her work. It was still missing something. Sunshine. She picked her yellow coloured pencil and drew a big bright sun.

Some things you have to process alone. I go to my room. I pull out my sketchbook. And I start drawing the sixth piece again. But this time I draw the woman with all the windows open. All the light coming through. No bricks left at all. I do not know what it means yet. But I draw it anyway.
