I was so excited I said yes immediately. To prove myself, I found a Starbucks and started writing. The column was a brand soft‑ad. It took me eight or nine hours, until evening. Leo came around mealtimes to keep me company. We’d eat salad, chat. He was such a warm, soft person. The piece was finally accepted. I got five hundred dollars.
