I crouched beside the pool, my reflection rippling in the pale glow, except it wasn’t just my reflection. The face staring back blinked a moment after I did. Its lips curved into a slow, knowing smile. My blood ran cold. “Who are you?” I whispered. The reflection tilted its head. The sky in the mirror darkened, the stars smothered, the moon turning crimson as blood seeped across its surface like spilled ink. And then I saw it — me, standing under that blood-red moon, my hands slick with shadowlight, Kael kneeling before me, a blade buried in his chest. His black eyes met mine one last time before fading to ash.

“You need to stop this madness!” Before he could turn his attention back to Nula, I struck him hard with my stick. The force sent him staggering back, and for a moment, there was silence. “Annalise!” he snarled, charging at me. My heart raced as I shut my eyes, hoping for strength. I felt a wave of energy wash over me, and as I opened my eyes, a force hit Marcus. He was thrown back, transforming into his human form, panting weakly. The wound on his side was deeper than I had anticipated, blood soaking through his clothes.

His hand is huge compared to mine, and I have to actively keep myself from shuddering as his deep voice vibrates along my nerves through our connection.
