Her body stiffened, and her eyes widened with shock. “Julie, what’s wrong?” Richard, the male nurse accompanying her, asked with concern. Julie didn’t respond. She ran closer, dropping to her knees beside Elizah’s body. With trembling hands, she removed the cloth covering the girl’s face. In an instant, Julie recoiled, her body trembling violently. “Elizah ....” she whispered in disbelief. “This can’t be.” When Julie tried to embrace her, Elizah screamed in terror. “Aaaah! Monster! Bastard!” she cried, shoving Julie away. Her body twisted wildly, her arms protecting herself as if fighting off a shadow only she could see.

His fingers worked with surprising care as he secured the handkerchief around my arm. “These other wounds…” I drew in a sharp breath as his icy fingers trailed lightly over my skin. “These weren’t made by vampires,” he said quietly. “They were inflicted by humans.” I stayed silent. “What kind of life have you lived, Lady Winter?” My throat tightened. “The humans call us monsters,” he murmured, his voice darkening. “Yet no vampire would treat their own kind this way.” A strange ache settled in my chest as his words lingered in my mind.

She smiled and took the hands of the man back into the cover before covering him up to his belly with the spread. Scott was in discomfort having someone's hands roaming all over his body. Plus it was not just anyone's hands, it was that of a woman and the woman was also a human; the creatures he hated the most. Much as he would like to slap the hands away and warn her never to get any closer to him, he reined his emotions in. Even if he didn't hate humans, didn't the woman know that it was wrong for her to keep moving her hands all over a man? Or did she think that the male species' body was made without any emotion? Such that wouldn't allow them to feel anything for such a daring woman?
