Just silent sidewalks and distant parked cars. Pure fucking luck. Heart slamming against my ribs, I spun around, yanked the door open, and dove back inside. The door slammed shut with a hollow bang. My fingers fumbled the gear shift as I threw the car into reverse. It lurched backward violently. I barely checked the rearview mirror before slamming it into drive and peeling away. “Let’s get moving.” I nodded, smiling up at him. Together, we walked towards the car. The men nodded their heads in greeting, holding the door as all three of us slid into the expensive cool interior of the car. The men got into the driver seats again and drove off. All through the ride, my eyes remained on the window, watching as we passed the familiar streets of Detroit. The city that had given me hope and dreams, yet still broke my heart and stole those dreams from me. The same city that was now going to mend my broken heart and fix my family again.

He always knew when something was off and that was a problem. An old car finally slowed and the window rolled down with a whine sound. An elderly man leaned over from the driver’s seat, peering at us through thick glasses. “Everything alright?” he asked, his voice cautious but not unkind. Ashley reacted before I could. “Yes, well...no, not really” she said quickly, stepping forward. I shot her a look but she ignored it. “Our car broke down,” she continued, her voice trembling just enough to sound believable. “We’ve been trying to get into the city since morning. We just need to get to the main district or anywhere close would help.”

I cursed under my breath. Justine shifted the car to the left, squeezing the rotten against the car it had popped out of. Justine had to pull over once we were on some other clean expanse of gravel since the window had become a shambles. “I think we should change our car. Like a jeep wrangle or something?” Peter suggested. I agreed. Well, I also could not afford to ride ever again with this. I mean, we could do some carjacking. It’s not illegal in times like this.

There’s a few pedestrians sulking about, only lifting their heads to ponder who that is driving like a maniac. “This will do.” Robert says. “We can walk the rest, we’ll just need to find a way to get underground.” The driver responds swiftly, pulling the car over to a spot that’s more deserted. We quickly unbuckle and pile out of the car. Roman tips his head toward the driver and the driver nods back. Then he steers away leaving us here in this awful city. I instantly feel exposed and vulnerable. I guess I hadn’t realized how used to loft living and body guard protection I’ve grown to. There’s hardly any time to orient myself as we move on our feet up the sidewalk.
