“Let me guess. The time I fell out of a tree trying to rescue a cat?” “And get stuck yourself,” he finished, his grin widening. “Yep, that one made the highlight.” “Unbelievable,” I muttered. “Anything else?” “Oh, plenty,” he said, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Like the time you tried to ride a bike down a flight of stairs because, and I quote, ‘It’ll totally work.” I groaned louder, hiding my face in my hands. “Why does he share the most humiliating stories?” “Because they’re funny,” he said, his tone light but teasing. “And, if I’m being honest, kind of impressive. I mean, you survived riding a bike down stairs. That’s bold.”

A childhood visual of the old witch from the library Hansel and Gretel book pops into my head and only increases the giggles I exude. “I hope not, I’m barely grown, and she might add me to tonight’s menu. I’m too big for an oven!” I point out between snorts of stupid laughter and Meadow caves and starts giggling too, lightening our whole mood. I guess the tension and the heavy weight of this journey has us strung out enough, that even a lame joke like this has enough power to break the strings and have us erupt. It’s needed, between us, this bonding over awful jokes.

I smiled, intrigued by her enthusiasm, and leaned back in my chair, silently encouraging her to continue. Sophia launched into a series of stories, each one more silly and entertaining than the last. She told me about the time she had accidentally spilled coffee all over her shirt and had to walk out of the shop with a giant stain on her chest. She told me about the time she had tried to order a complicated coffee drink and had ended up with a concoction that was completely undrinkable. And she told me about the time she had met a friend at the coffee shop and had ended up getting into a heated argument with him over something ridiculous. What started off as a fairly subdued group quickly opened up as each of them told funny stories about themselves, knowing that Mark, Myra and Maddy didn't really know any of them. Mark told them of how he'd been so hungover in a lecture at college once that he'd fallen asleep and when he woke up it took him three hours to discover he had drawings on his face. Maddy told them of a photoshoot she'd done where she fainted in front of a client but still got the job, and of how she once did the infamous 'skirt-tucked-into-her-underwear' thing and no-one told her.

I start with a small giggle on my face. “I spent my day work all day, mmm at my family company” I laugh. “W-what! That was so boring” Z laughs. “Huh, and I got drunk in the middle of the night, in my bedroom floor, and woke up on couch all the time” I end. Both of us laughing because of the story, our faces are getting red because of the laugh. “Oh, my goodness! That’s insane!” Z tried to stop her laughs and leave a little giggle on her face. “Yeah, my life was insane!” I laugh softly.

They’ve even fallen to a routine, which is singing, storytelling and laughing, eating, light drinking, repeat. And it doesn’t come as a surprise that Logan shares plenty of his anecdotes. He thinks that he doesn’t sound stupid in at least one of them. But hey, he doesn’t have to know that until the right time comes. “I have a sensitive soul, you know,” he laments jokingly. “When you say it like that, I become deaf to any good parts of your story,” Megan retorts and almost instantly, everyone falls into howls of laughter.

She pulled back, a grin spreading across her face. "Okay, enough with the sappy stuff before I break out in hives. Want to hear a joke?” I laughed shaking off the heaviness of the conversations "Sure hit me” She launched into a ridiculous story about a goose that somehow got stuck in a wedding cake and by the time she was done I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. Once the laughter died down we slipped into a more relaxed conversation. I told her about the explosion at the HQ. “Have you heard anything new about it?"

"At least it makes for a funny story now." She told them more. About the time she accidentally delivered someone's lunch order to the wrong building and ended up eating it herself because she could not find the right address. About the customer who tipped her with a singing bass mounted on a plaque because he had no cash. About the day she rode her bike through a parade route without realizing it and ended up being photographed by tourists who thought she was part of the show. The room filled with laughter. Real, genuine laughter. The kind that made your stomach hurt and your face ache.

“I once tripped walking into a conference hall. In front of investors. Once though.” He laughed, the sound warm and genuine. “And did you recover?” “I pretended it was intentional.” “Of course you did.” Their laughter came easier than she expected. Effortless. Not forced. Not strategic. She told him about a disastrous attempt at cooking local food during one of her business trips. He countered with a story about mistaking a spicy pepper for something mild and paying for it dramatically. “You cried?” she teased. “Briefly,” he said with mock dignity. “But only internally.”
