Hunter embraced me carefully, and as darkness finally embraced me, I felt certain that even if my time in lupine form came to an end, I had lived fully, choosing my own destiny and loving Hunter. I succumbed to exhaustion, my eyes growing heavy as consciousness faded. Triumph and reassurance filled Hunter's heart, and even as darkness enveloped me, I knew somehow we fulfilled our destiny. With one final smile, I surrendered to the darkness.

So I patted his cheek. “Reverse. Take off. And keep driving. Don’t look back until you’re out of this road.” He gave the obedient nod. In a swift motion, I got out of the Mazda and shut the door. Then, I held my breath and watched Hunter lifting the sledge hammer, his mouth opened to say his peace—. Only for Ethan to do a professional reversal and disappear into the darkness.

Kate and Susanna had planned well, there wasn’t much else to do but wait to see if it worked. As Izzy and Kate kept talking, Susanna was making progress toward the spring and the Kreil were tracking Susanna's path from the day before. What are we going to do?” “Gather the warriors,” I murmur, downing the rest of the drink. “We should go see for ourselves.” “But I don’t get it,” Nyra breathes, shaking her head. “The veil hasn’t been opened in years for a reason. If you are right, if hunters are behind this, it only means that someone betrayed us.” Luca nods, folding his arms across his chest. “We all know the only way hunters would have made it through that veil is if access was granted to them. The red looked obscene against the paper, like a blossom of warning. I scanned them slowly, committing faces to memory. One of them had Petra’s eyes in it. The thought made my jaw tighten.

That was when my phone buzzed with an email. I opened it to find a photo of the endless ocean, its blues merging with the sky. There it was, Wynnie's goodbye note.
