As innocent as a hunter’s adolescence could be, anyway. The vampire lurched towards me, his canines distended far below his lips and bared in a gruesome snarl. His dark face was scarred, the white lines stark against his brown skin, and I sidestepped his attack neatly. My boots crushed more glass beneath my feet, and then I was spinning through the air, swinging back towards the old lady vampire and retrieving my stake. In one clean, swift movement I yanked it free, and rammed it through the scarred vampire’s heart.

She walked a few steps behind Austin, still distributing the remaining bread to the others. Then he lowered his head opened his mouth wide and with a groan from deep in his gut, brought his fangs down. Pierced the pale skin and sank the sharp fangs deep into the girls throat.

Dread filled me as I watched Sandy release Hunter’s arm and casually walk behind the Luna’s throne, retrieving a large box wrapped in paper with a big bow. “Open it,” Hunter commanded using his Alpha influence once Sandy placed the box at my feet. I kneeled, tearing through the paper and lifting the lid, preparing for whatever was in it. Nothing. Tears streamed down my face as I reached in with shaking hands, pulling out a horrific taxidermy display of Whisker’s final moment. Somebody ripped her throat out as she was nailed to the board.

“So what did you want to talk about? Seriously who sends – we need to talk – message?” I grinned sheepishly. “I figured that was the best way to get your attention.” Alex looked at me, staring into my eyes. My heart skipped a beat. “When you smile you have my attention. When you breathe you have my attention. You are the only one who has my attention Hacker Girl.” A blush crept up my neck and face and I looked down, feeling a little flushed by his words. I didn’t even know what to reply to that. Alex being so sweet was a rare sight.

Then I remove his leather jacket, rip off his shirt and look at all the bullets that the hunters pumped into him. Cringing, I get up and rummage through his drawers until I find a dagger and start digging out the array of bullets lining his back. I only stop once I see the holes on his back start to heal, then I turn him over, and a cold sweat covers my body. I can see three bullets wedged close to his heart. “Fuck,” I say, knowing this must have been Xenia’s doing since she always aims for the heart. With trembling fingers and a mind made up, I pull out the arrows and dig out the bullets once more before focusing on the three close to his heart. I don’t know how I’m going to do this, but I
