Dane started, but she had already walked right into the clearing. The largest beast snarled and lunged, fast. Too fast. I screamed. But Lila didn’t move. She closed her eyes… and hummed. It was soft. Familiar. I recognized it instantly. A lullaby. The one Zane used to hum to her when she had nightmares. “Lila…” I whispered, heart pounding. The beast froze mid-step. Its body twitched. Its head tilted, confused. She kept humming. The other two beasts stopped too.

Humming. The tune is cracked, the rhythm broken. But I know what it is. Lira does, too. It’s the same song the Pit’s whelps used to murmur when they thought no one was listening. A lullaby with no words. Just the kind of tune meant to hush something in the dark. Lira’s shoulders go stiff. Mine do, too. My hand tightens on the blade at my hip. I don’t draw it. We don’t stop.

I pressed kisses against their foreheads as they replied. "Good night." I left on their nightlight before heading to my room, slipping under the covers as my mind began to count knowingly. 1..2..3..4..5 Not even a second later I could hear the door open and close. I soon felt two little bodies climb onto my bed. I turned around pulling them into my arms allowing them to relax in my arms. "I love you," I whispered, but they didn't respond since they were already asleep. -

Lara’s POV The lullaby wrapped around us like a gentle cocoon, my voice soft and melodic as I sang the old Frost Fang melody about the Moon Goddess watching over her stars. The children lay nestled against me on the oversized bed, their small bodies warm and finally relaxing after the ordeal.

he asked, his voice breaking the silence. "Some," I admitted. "It's written in an old dialect of the werewolf language. I recognize a few of the symbols from my research, but it’s slow going." He nodded, coming over to peer at the scroll. "What have you figured out so far?" I traced a line of symbols with my finger, translating aloud. "This section speaks of a powerful ritual that can be performed during a lunar eclipse. It mentions a 'turning point' and 'great power' being harnessed."

Slowly forming a snake. “Am I supposed to be afraid of a snake?” Justin asked narrowing his eyes. Growling softly I concentrated, morphing the snake into a dragon. Having it float towards Justin. “Admit that I know what I’m doing.” I deadpanned giving him another icy glare. Justin stared at the dragon hovering inches away from him seemingly intrigued. “I have seen death and I have seen life, but not in all my travels have I found someone as peculiar as yourself.” He murmured before adding “I bet you don't even know what you are though.”

I tiptoe out and close the door behind me. I wait a moment outside the door. Zara’s cries make my heart feel like it’s in a vise. A sad smile comes across my face when I hear Mom singing a lullaby. It’s the same one she always sang to me when I was little. Even from outside the room, her voice makes me feel better.
