He looked like he was in agony. But I was staring at the fresh scar on the webbing of his right hand, my entire body turning ice cold. That scar was identical to the one on the hand holding the woman's waist in the profile picture of the anonymous poster I had just seen. If I remembered correctly, that scar appeared three months ago. I was two months pregnant then, and we were walking in the deep forest. A feral Rogue suddenly rushed out. Kael didn't think twice before shielding me, fighting the beast with his bare hands.

I missed him and I hated myself for it because what kind of person misses a monster? No one else but me. I'm so fucked up.

I smiled, "maybe I don't have to." She said nothing, waiting. I looked down at my own glowing hands. "I spent my whole life trying to control myself." I raised my eyes back to hers. "Trying not to become a monster." I laughed softly, the sound hollow. "Trying not to hurt people." The energy around me surged higher. "But this place," I looked around at the twisting darkness, "it keeps teaching me that maybe monsters aren't born." My eyes locked with hers, unblinking. "Maybe they're created."

And that terrified him. Kristen had looked at him like he was more than a monste, like he was a good man. And deep down, he believed her. But belief is dangerous. It makes you soft. And softness is fatal in his world. Carlo collapses into a chair, overwhelmed. He’s a feared man, a killer.
