My chest heaved as I tried to hold back the sobs building in my throat, but it was useless. "I don't..." I gasped, my voice breaking. "I don't have... I don't have anyone!." Ayla sat frozen long after the file was shut, her hands pressed flat against the leather as if pinning it down might also anchor the storm tearing through her chest.
