The three magic Knights Leaders went out of the portal and stood on the three chairs placed on the sides of the King’s chair. “And let’s welcome our Kingdom’s Magic Leader, King Magnus!” everyone rose from their seats to welcome the King. King Magnus is a fire mage, my father met with him once and I remembered that his aura is as tremendous as my father. He talked to me before and he was really kind but he’s aura is just so powerful that even though he showed kindness towards me, I still kept a distance.

“Trust us to help you.” I blinked, looking around. There was nobody nearby other than Gavin, Nan, and Irene, and none of them had this voice that was in my head. I stared down at my hands, seeing the magic crackle at the tips of my fingers, and I flexed those fingers, feeling the magic surge inside of me. Could the magic be speaking to me? Was that one of the perks of being the host of magic? Before I knew what was happening, my voice was booming across the crowd, turning everyone’s attention to me.

“You’re smarter than that, Maise. You know it’s a personal problem we’re discussing.” “Yeah, I have questions about that,” I mused. “Wasn’t it just a few days ago you were claiming your own friends couldn’t necessarily be trusted?” “That was before,” he sighed. “Before what?” I was toeing the line of his patience and I knew it. Isaac turned from the refrigerator with food in hand and glared at me. “The only individual involved in the spell that is powerful enough to go toe to toe with the magic you host is Ammit. My friends are in the clear.”

I whisper, unsure who it’s for. The bond hums in agreement—or maybe amusement. I close my eyes, breathing deep, grounding myself in the familiar thrum of my magic. Fire answers, steady and loyal. It always has been. “I choose me,” I say softly. “No matter what.” The words feel true. Even if the night doesn’t believe them yet. And somewhere between the moonlight and the silence, I know one thing with unsettling clarity— This isn’t over. Not even close.

From the middle of the ring, a tall drake with the long red center spike of a sea drake takes his place near the center of the stage. “Greetings Noble folk from across the realms,” His voice carries on the wind, augmented somehow by some unseen force, as he bows before us all, his wings transformed into a coat of iridescent scales. “I am THE Magician, the bringer of mystery and magic from across the realms. On behalf of our benevolent Queen Eleanora, I wish you all a brilliant and fabulous ALL KINGDOM FAIRE!!!” With those last three words, he pumps his fist to punctuate his words as flames shoot up around him, exploding into stars of colored light.

It feels…sweet and kind and gentle. “They are very sensitive, sweet beings,” he says to me, watching them. They finally pull back, wiping their eyes. “Can you do good magic? I’m Iza, by the way.” The others introduce themselves to me, Athalin, Kazu and Lewa. “So, can you?” “Do good magic?” I think for a moment, then pull a ball of light into my hand. There’s a lot of oohing and aahing. “Can we touch it?”

So this kind fo magic should come easy to me. First I should feel the magic within me. Luckily I already know how it feels when I activate my magic since I have been doing it for so long already. I take a deep breath in and say the word that is used in the ancient tongue for this kind of magic in my mind. “Ickrak'ey.” Suddenly within my body I can feel everything around me and in my mind I can see four beings a few miles away from us, thinking water from a river. They seem to be the rogues I am smelling.

There is no single sign of regret on his face and it triggers Amira's emotion. "Give me back the Heart of Magic!" she demands as she stands on her feet, but Kian just turns his back like he has not heard her say anything. Lifting the Gem up, leveling it with his eyes, he chants," The Heart of Magic belongs to me and it is mine alone. I am now the most powerful creature in the land and I shall use this to reinvent the world."

I released her to save her from her own thoughts. "What happened wasn't your fault, Selene," I said earnestly. Selene looked me in the eyes fully now and the sorrow behind them was more apparent than ever. "Yes, it is, Tor," she said sadly. "Because it's me." My brow furrowed at her words. "What do you mean?" I asked. Selene squeezed her eyes shut and tears trickled down her cheeks. "I am the one born of the moon and of magic." Her voice was hardly a whisper as she confessed. "That's why the silver can affect me… because I am half shifter."
