I curl in on myself, hugging my knees, trying to make myself disappear. The darkness inside me grows. I curl tighter, pressing my face against my knees, every muscle screaming. The metal bites into my back, into my arms, into every part of me. My lips are cracked, bleeding. My breath rattles shallow. “I won’t break… I won’t…” I whisper. But even as the words leave me, I feel them crumble. My voice is nothing but air. My body is failing. And the worst part is—I can feel the cracks spreading inside me.

“You and I. It sounds so strange coming from you.” Something in his expression cracked, a fleeting glimpse of guilt flashing in his pale eyes.
