“You and I. It sounds so strange coming from you.”
Something in his expression cracked, a fleeting glimpse of guilt flashing in his pale eyes. He looked down, then back at me, his fingers lifting to trace the contours of my face. His touch was hesitant, almost reverent, as if he feared I would shatter beneath him.
A sad smile ghosted his lips before he pulled me into his arms.
And I broke.
The weight of everything crashed over me, the floodgates finally giving way.
A choked sob tore from my throat as I collapsed against his chest, gripping onto him like he was the only thing anchoring me to this world.
