I couldn’t resist drawing idle circles on her arm. “It triggered a memory from the past,” she whispered. “It was exactly what happened—the intentional spilling of coffee on me. But for different reasons.” She sniffed, and I pulled out another tissue, handing it to her. I wanted to know. “Valerie… the lady who hurled hot coffee at me.” Her eyes glistened, though she fought the tears. “It hurts, you know. To be used by someone you thought loved you.” Now I understood—it was heartbreak.

That was something I wasn’t ready for. My heart couldn’t bear another wound. Everyone thinks dating or getting married to someone else was going to be the best thing that has happened to me. They don't realize just how broken I am inside, just how damaged. They don’t know the things I have been through. All the tears and the heartache. All the pain and the betrayal.
