He had felt it too, the tremor in the ground, the drop in temperature that preceded the freeze.
"Keep moving," I said. "I will handle it."
He wanted to argue. I saw it in the set of his jaw. But he had learned to trust me, or at least to trust that I knew what I was doing. He ran ahead, reaching the shadow of the far cliff just as the freeze hit.
I stopped in the middle of the open ground and faced the cold.
It came at me like a wave, visible now, a wall of white frost that rolled across the forest floor. The bone black trees in its path crystallized instantly, their bark splitting with sounds like gunfire. The ground froze solid beneath my feet. The air turned to needles.
