The homeward journey to the new residence proved to be an extremely uncomfortable experience. I remained seated in the back seat while I fixed my gaze on the Boston roadways. My stepbrother was Enzo. I muttered then pulled her hard against my chest, earning a gasp from her. I engulfed her body with my strong arms and buried my face in her neck. "Let's just stay like this for a while." My voice was just above a whisper. The warmth of her body felt like my peaceful place. Even though she had no scent, I still loved to sniff her neck like she had the most intoxicating scent ever. I mumbled almost silently, watching as the people around me continued with their daily chores and trials. “Because they do not have the keen sense of smell that we inherited sister, they will never know the world from its scents as we do. I press a hand to it, trying to communicate my love, and my determination to protect this innocent life, even if it was the last thing I did. Several guards turned their heads. She didn’t care. Her throat tightened painfully as years of silence pressed against her chest.

Her saccharine voice coats every syllable. “Torpor? Corporeal Hibernation? I guess it makes sense, But tell me SISTER what about my other questions?” There were other questions I had asked earlier, still unanswered and she is no sister to me, the thought of her trying to seduce me yet calling me brother is fucked up. I can smell my lovely Azalea is nearby, but I still can’t move to go to her.

But she just looked away, silent. The doctor came closer, speaking softly. “Her fall left her in a critical state. She needs time to recover. Be patient.” But how could I be patient when my own sister couldn’t remember me? I clutched my chest, feeling it splinter. My mind screamed to believe she’d get better, but my heart was drowning. How could I tell Mom this? How could I convince her, when I couldn’t even convince myself? I sat with Betty for what felt like hours, holding her hand though she didn’t squeeze back. Finally, I knew I couldn’t delay any longer. Mom was still waiting outside, unaware of everything.

I glanced back at my sister, watching her struggle to crawl towards me, reaching for me with shaking hands. Just then, the door banged open, and a grown man strode in, his presence filling the room, and without warning, he seized my sister by the hair and forced her to sit. My breath caught. My heart raced faster in fear as tears blurred everything, watching my sister cry out in pain.
