Water rushed into my mouth and nose as I struggled wildly, my hands clawing at anything I could reach. I tried to push myself up, but the grip on my neck held me down with merciless strength. I thrashed harder, my legs kicking violently, the tub rocking under the force of my movements. Water splashed everywhere, slapping against the tiled walls and spilling onto the floor. My lungs burned. I needed air. I needed air now. The figure leaned closer, its voice finally breaking through the chaos. “Die.” The word echoed through the water, through my skull, vibrating inside me like a command rather than a sound.

But this time, it was different. I was drowning, water flooding my lungs as I tried to scream, my dress dragging me down into the dark depths as shadows hovered above the water. Bright lights flashed across my vision like fireworks as my lungs burned. I kicked and clawed at the water in desperation, wishing that I had learned how to swim when I had the chance. But it was too late now. I was going to die.

“Sorry to burst your bubble, princess, but the water is shallow. The only thing you can drown in this fountain is your feet.” My face heats up. Is that what he thinks I was doing last night? Trying to drown myself? Is that what everyone thinks? “I wasn’t,” I say defensively, frowning harder. “…trying to drown.” I’m not suicidal for God’s sake. He leans back against the edge of the fountain, crossing his arms casually. His smirk never wavers, as if he finds my annoyance amusing. “Well, it sure didn’t look like you were practising your synchronized swimming routine. You know, with the dress and all.”

The one who was drowning that night and I saved?”

Just as I am about to retort I feel myself slip off the edge to air, losing balance and falling backward. And suddenly it hit me, I truly might die tonight.

It fucking burns, and I'm choking when he brings me up. As a cop, I thought about being shot, stabbed, or even dying in a car accident. I handled it and rarely thought about the consequences of my job. Drowning terrifies me. Kennedy pushes my head under the water again. This time I breathe out slowly through my nose until there's no air left in my lungs.

Ahh maybe he's just playing with me. I laugh it off and go towards the pool back of our house. Thinking of taking a dip I jump in the water. I went in deep holding my breath, and relaxed knowing that this time was limited. It is really peaceful. Suddenly I'm pulled out of the water. What the? "Are you crazy? Now you go to the limit of actually drowning yourself?" Blake shouted. Wait, Blake? "You- here? Wait. Drowning?" I ask, confused. "Yes. Drowning. When a person struggles to breath and is suffering, having a near death experience. That's called Drowning!" He replied. Now that I notice he is drenched in water.

“Just do not go out any further, please. Don’t risk your life when you are just getting to live it.” “Sapphire, before you go, earlier you said ‘drown’, what does this word mean?” “To drown is to be submerged in water until you breath it in and die or almost die. It’s also used to described being suffocated by something, usually unpleasant.” “Sapphire, was I drowning in the darkness till you came?” “Yes, Evangeline. I believe you were drowning in your own darkness, even though you did not know it yet.” Sapphire’s voice was now full of sadness again. “I must sleep now. Please consider hiding and sleeping as well, we will both need our strength for the journey ahead.”

Time seemed to lose its meaning as he delved further into the bowels of the cave, each turn leading him deeper into the unknown. Suddenly, the ground beneath him gave way, and Aeron plummeted into darkness. His surroundings blurred as he fell, and a sense of weightlessness enveloped him until he crashed into icy water. Panic seized him as he struggled against the relentless pull of the ocean's depths, disoriented and desperate for air. His limbs flailed in the inky abyss, but the surface seemed to elude him. Aeron's thoughts raced, memories of Myra and their daughter flashing before his eyes. The realization that he might never see them again fueled his fight against the drowning darkness.
