“We do this now. Tonight.” The word tonight made the air sharp. Dawn would be too late — Draci’s window that night could mean the difference between rescue and burial. I felt the old dial turn in my head, the one that set the engine of action in motion. Ten minutes of current-free water meant an island we could touch, breath, and grab things from. Ten minutes was a knife, but a knife with an edge when we sharpened it right.

"Promise me you won't give up." The heavy material finally clears my thrashing limbs as I kick as hard as I can desperate to reach the surface, I couldn't bring enough air into my lungs. Salty seawater gushed down into my lungs, causing a surge of intense pain to ricochet off my ribs and around my torso. I never thought I'd die like this. I saw myself floating in the air all of a sudden, and then I was suddenly in a pool of water. Swinging…… well I'm not so good at swimming, so it's hard for me to swing. I was drowning, and I saw myself stuck in a hospital bed. It was as if I'm glued to the bed, and I just couldn't get up. Breathing and understanding water is just impossible for me……. The world turned cold and blue. The glass floor had vanished, and I was falling. I hit the water hard, the impact knocking the air from my lungs. I squeezed Elle against my chest, my heart screaming. I couldn't let her go. I couldn't let her drown in this nightmare. The water was salty and dark. Above me, the lights of the glass house looked like dying stars. I kicked my legs, fighting to stay near the surface, but the weight of my wet clothes pulled me down.

I’m flying, falling, gasping for air and it’s perfect! Somewhere far below I hear it. Hear him. “Ellie! Noooo!” He screams, but it’s too late. Because I’m already going under and everything above the water ceases to exist.

I inhaled water and no longer did I feel panic, it was replaced with dread. Not knowing if I was going to drown or if we were close to the surface the dread just heightened.

“Drowning in your damn tunnels.” Strong hands cupped my face, forcing me still. “You listen to me,” he said, each word sharp as a blade. “I don’t care if you’ve never touched water deeper than your knees. You will not drown here. Not while I’m breathing.” The promise was reckless. Impossible. And yet, something in me clung to it like the last rope in a storm. Another rumble shook the chamber. Water surged higher, hitting my waist. I stumbled, choking on a gasp. Adrian’s arm went around me instantly, dragging me against his side.
