Beside me, Geneva kept hassling me about going back to gather evidence. “Why are you so calm about this? You were the one who said you wanted to come back to expose the truth. Why aren’t you doing anything now that you’re back?” I pulled Geneva into my embrace and said with a laugh, “There’s no rush. What, are you worried that I won’t make enough money from this workshop to maintain your lifestyle? I’m just waiting for Zachary to panic and incriminate himself.” As I expected, Zachary started to panic upon finding out that I was back after having won Dr. Hubbard’s recognition.

Ivy narrowed her eyes slightly and went back to the work that lay in front of her. Her life had already moved far ahead, much like a feather being carried in the wind.

"You know that's not what I meant," Alpha Ethan said. "But that's exactly how I understand it," I retorted. Looking at the he-wolf before me, I felt only an unbearable sense of unfamiliarity. I turned away and left without looking back. The wind along the way was biting. Shivering with cold, I walked until I reached the river at the border, a place where no one knew me. Only then did I dare to gasp heavily for air and brace myself against a tree trunk as I sank into a crouch.

The plane was up in the sky, among the clouds. After a short moment of turbulence, it flew steadily. I looked out at the clouds, feeling a wave of relief I had never felt before. Xander must have seen the contents on the thumb drive already, too. He was perhaps guessing how I found out about his secrets. His methods of climbing up the ladder and amassing wealth were so inconspicuous. Technically, someone like me, who had never once worked at the office, should not have been able to discover this.

“But you are not leaving me again, you dark piece of parchment.” When I lie back down, the wind howls fiercely outside, and somehow, the sheer external violence makes it easier to surrender to sleep again. When I open my eyes a second time, I’m back inside the nightmare landscape. The spell is securely in my hand—no longer glued, but there, fused to my palm. Ash crunches loudly beneath my feet as I walk. “Zeke?” I call softly, my voice sounding weak against the terrifying silence. “Zeke, where have you hidden yourself?”

It knows how stories end… and how they begin again. "I’ll wait," I say one last time, louder now. Stronger. "As long as it takes." And when the wind answers me this time, it’s not cold. It’s warm... like fire, like a promise. THE END OF BOOK ONE!

My wolf pressed close to the surface, ears swiveling toward every creak and rustle. Halfway to the stream, I saw it: a single black feather lying on the snow. Ravens were common enough, but this one was different. The edges shimmered faintly, like oil on water. I picked it up, and the moment my skin touched it, a voice brushed against my mind. She could feel the worms wriggling in her heart, the squirming of the worms made her stomach queasy. However, her attention was suddenly diverted as a gust of cold wind swept across her face, and blew her long hair. The gust of wind carried voices whispering in her ear, not the whispers of the surrounding leaves, but other whispers that she could understand. Leah looked left and right, it seemed that no one felt the gust of wind and whispers except for her. Even Mia and Grace who were standing so close to her didn't feel what she felt. The whisper called her name, she was sure. Not the sound of the wind, or the voices in her head, someone called her name
