he said in a mocking, disdainful tone. I lowered my head and picked up the scarf. That night, Sean suddenly grabbed it from the couch and hurried out in his wheelchair. I thought that he had just lied about not liking it. Worried that he might catch a cold, I quietly followed him. However, I saw him give the scarf to Josie, who was waiting outside. “Josie, this scarf is for you. You don’t need to buy clothes for the stray dogs anymore. Wendy’s scarf is warm. You can lay it on their bed.”

I walked ahead, a mix of mild exasperation and fondness washing over me. Rain Beckett was a guy I had met down in Seattle. We had both just graduated from college and, as it turned out, actually grew up in the same hometown. We hit it off almost instantly. Out of nowhere, James shifted a little, lifting his head to glance at the window. “Baby,” he whispered, nudging me gently. “Look.” I frowned playfully. “At what? I was just starting to get comfortable.” He chuckled, tilting my chin toward the glass. “It’s snowing outside.” I blinked, my heart leaping as I quickly pushed myself up to see. Tiny flakes were falling from the sky, soft and white. My lips curved, and I couldn’t stop the smile that spread across my face.
