Everyone feels the touch of evil at some point in life, regardless of his or her moral striving. Demons, the lower agents of evil, have many guises and operate under many names and with many purposes. In the pagan view, they are a part of the natural order, entities of moral ambivalence who mostly deceive and interfere. In the Christian view, they are evil—fallen angels who, as Lucifer did, chose pride over obedience to God and were cast out of heaven. They are doomed to eternal hell and serve the Devil, making unending assaults on human beings in an attempt to subvert souls to the Devil’s domain.

Wallowing in guilt and shame will only set me back, but the reason the demon got out of hell was because another, more powerful demon was on a death mission. Stop it, I tell myself. The deadmen were the most varied set of demons within the demon realm and the most dangerous due to how varied their abilities were as well. As for the undead, they were divided into three stages: Deathness, Deathless, and Deathlessness.

I hadn’t seen her in years now. After finding my way to a demon club that she attended frequently, I gritted my teeth, cursed myself out, and stepped into the building. Fire burned through the first room, the flames licking the ceiling and the heat hotter than fucking hell. It ensured that only demons stepped into this space; no other species were allowed. Once I walked through the fucking fire that seared the edges of my clothes, I opened a heavy metal door and stepped into The Inferno. Demons in their truest forms sauntered around the room, their horns out and lengthened and their eyes a piercing red.

Even for us. I close my eyes, on the verge of hyperventilating again. The hierarchy of demons was discussed briefly in school. There are lower-level demons, like the ones I hunt and kill. They live on earth, hiding in abandoned buildings and caves. They’re dangerous, of course, but aren’t much of a match for those of us with magic. Then there are demons in the Fourth Hierarchy, similar to lower-level demons but have the power to possess victims, much like the one we dealt with in the woods. They are dangerous and rare to encounter and have the ability to move from earth to their demon dimensions and back.

"From what we saw during the last battle… the next one will be worse. Horrifying, even. The demons Roosevelt commands… they devour souls." A collective gasp spread through the room. The betas who hadn't joined the battle looked like their blood had frozen. "D-devour souls?" one of them stuttered. "Like… our souls? My soul?" Even Erin's expression darkened. "Yes," King Johnson said grimly. "Your soul. These demons feed on them. And they targeted Werewolves the most." A council member whispered under his breath, "This is madness…"
