I've actually been wrestling with this lately for my own project. For a truly smooth flow, you need something that handles the creative back-and-forth without making you want to throw your laptop. Scrivener is my anchor—it’s where the messy draft lives. I can’t imagine structuring a long-form project without its corkboard and outlining tools. But it’s not a solo act.

Where things get sticky is the handoff. I used to export from Scrivener to a Word doc and then try to format for submission, which was a nightmare. Lately, I’ve been using Atticus as the bridge. I write in Scrivener, compile a clean manuscript, then import it into Atticus for the interior layout and eBook conversion. It’s not perfect—the styling options can feel a bit rigid sometimes—but having a single tool that spits out both a print-ready PDF and EPUB files saves a ridiculous amount of time compared to juggling InDesign and Calibre.

I know some people swear by Vellum, and it makes gorgeous books, but being locked to Mac is a dealbreaker for me. The real test of a workflow is when you’re on the tenth round of edits from a proofreader. If you have to manually re-apply formatting every single time, you’ll lose your mind. That’s why I stick with this combo; I update the master file in Scrivener, re-export, and the styles in Atticus mostly carry over. The less I have to think about margins and page breaks at that stage, the better.

So I actually gave Ink a pretty serious look a while back when I was weighing up distribution for a niche cozy mystery series. The royalty structure they advertise is appealing on the surface, especially for direct sales, but I found the real leverage isn't just in the percentage you earn per copy. It's in treating the platform as one part of a much wider funnel. You need to drive your own audience there, and that means having other eggs in the basket—a solid email list, a consistent social presence where you genuinely connect with readers, maybe a Patreon for the superfans.

What I've seen from authors who do well there is they use Ink not as a final destination, but as a well-designed storefront. They'll write serialized fiction and publish chapters regularly, building anticipation, then bundle those chapters into e-books for purchase. The key is converting casual readers who find you through the free tiers into buyers of the complete volumes. It requires a grind of consistent output, but the platform's format rewards that. It feels less like a magic money button and more like running a digital newsstand where you're the sole supplier and chief promoter.

The biggest plus I've seen with ink-specific platforms is probably discoverability, which can be a real make-or-break for new voices. You're not just throwing a file into the void; if the platform's algorithm or editorial staff picks you up, you can land in front of a ready-made audience that's specifically there to read serialized fiction. That's a huge leg up over the traditional querying slog where you might wait months for a single rejection.

But that leads straight into the major downside: control, or the lack of it. You're often locked into their release schedule and formatting. I watched a friend get really burned because their story did well, but the contract terms for any potential print or adaptation rights were heavily skewed to the platform, tying their hands for years. The royalties might look good on paper, but if you want to take your story elsewhere later, you might find you've signed away options you didn't fully understand. The speed of publishing is a double-edged sword, too—it encourages a relentless pace that can burn out writers or lead to unfinished stories when reader interest wanes.

Honestly, for a side project or a first attempt to build an audience, it can be a fantastic testing ground. Just go in with your eyes wide open about what you're giving up for that initial visibility. I'd never put my most precious, long-developed novel idea on there without a lawyer looking at the fine print first.
