Melinda's and Kieran's sharp, piercing eyes, scanned the endless rows of books. Zora led them around the library, pointing out the different sections and genres. There were books on philosophy, science, art, and history, each one meticulously cataloged and arranged on the shelves. The titles were written in elegant calligraphy, and the bindings were richly adorned with gold leaf and embossed lettering. Kieran and Melinda were overwhelmed by the sheer size of the collection, and they couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer amount of knowledge that was contained within these walls.

It was dark under the bed, but I could see a faint outline of something dark and wrapped in what looked like leather. Praying it wasn't a dead animal or something creepy like that, I stuck my hand into the hold, and pulled out the object. Dust rose, and I sneezed, at the same time scooting back out from under the bed. In the light, I could see that the object was squarish, and the leather binding was worn. I unravelled the binding to reveal an old book with shamanistic markings carved into the cover. Wow.

Saturday morning, after breakfast, Don gave Caroline the three books together. Not the individual copies, which she had received over the years of their publication—The Inside Account in the fifteenth year, The Ground Keeps in the sixteenth, The Emergent World in the eighteenth. She had read each one when it was published, had written to them about each one, and had discussed them with Ernest and Don on subsequent visits. But Don had had a set bound together: The Inside Account and The Ground Keeps and The Emergent World in a single volume, the three books bound in dark green leather with a title stamped in gold on the spine: THE INSIDE ACCOUNT / THE GROUND KEEPS / THE EMERGENT WORLD.

Gina said with her mouth full. Selena looked at her with a confused face. "Have you been reading more of those books?" She was referring to the books on Gina's desk that had weird titles like "How to properly unlock the door without the key." , "Speak like a smarty pants!" , "Who are you? I am the ugly world?" , "Books for people who are cops." And other titles. Selena didn't even want to think of how silly the contents were. Who on earth even wrote those books and where did Gina even get them?

I could only hope that she would have settled in again by tonight, because otherwise I would be allowed to sleep on the couch one night again - and it was really uncomfortable. Sighing, I leaned back and opened the completely tattered book again, which I actually already knew by heart. But I wanted to repeat as much as possible today so that I could get off to a good start tomorrow. I ran my finger over the familiar table of contents. Foreword, evolution, instinct, social life, physiology, reproduction, ancestry, stem groups and subspecies. How many times had I made this movement with my finger? I placed my hand on the cold knob, and it creaked open under my push, revealing a library. Dust floated in the amber light coming from a chandelier, the scent of old paper surrounded me like an embrace. Shelves towered on all sides, cracked and faded with a variety of books. My fingers drifted along the titles crested in the rectangular back of the books, then something caught my eye—a red hardback, its cover smooth and untouched. The title was etched in gold: LEGACY OF THE CROSS.
