I, of all people, know how poking around in the past can open up old wounds. We pulled into our apartment complex. We go up to our apartment and begin packing. Vincent wanders around looking at everything and eventually ends up in my room. “Nice room.” He notices my framed poems on the wall. He reads one aloud, “Darkness's Kiss: Every night it's the same dark dream. And it always ends with me in a scream…” It is a poem that I wrote about a vampire finding its mate and surrendering to it. He looks at me, “Goth phase?”

Taking her free hand, I watch Fulton take Sydney off to the other side, where the fire will be to lay their burning sticks down. “Wanna explain?” Merrick asks as we lean down with our fire. “Dude, apparently a vampire thing just happened to me. I said, stating the facts. She shook her head and eventually signaled for me to go ahead. “Oh, I already asked one. I saw a dining hall, so I got curious about whether vampires eat human food or not. Does it taste good? And can your bodies even digest it?” I rambled excitedly, trying to stay seated on the bed instead of running off to find a pen and paper. I loved information. Learning stuff without the pressure of an exam was one of the things I actually enjoyed.

He rummaged through his desk until he came across a notebook and a pen. “Will this work?” He asked, walking over to me. I nodded. “Perfect,” I answered, taking the supplies from him. “Thank you.” With that, I opened the notebook and began writing about my personal adventures. I wrote about everything that had happened to me. Some stuff was hard to write about. I hated remembering that new vampire and everything he had done. I hated remembering how he felt and how he made me feel. But I wrote it and by the time I finished, I had filled out multiple pages and I was satisfied. I knew in my heart that this was going to be the story that everybody talked about.

The first one was about the history of the pack, but it got kind of boring, so now I'm reading a fanfiction story about werewolves and vampires that someone wrote. Even though the werewolf and vampire story has some things in it that aren't true, I didn’t mind because I could tell it was written by a human. "Rachel," I said quietly, knowing that she was sitting behind me while I kept reading through all these papers. "Yes, Lady Denera?" Rachel answered, speaking softly and calmly. I let my thoughts linger for a moment, wondering if I should ask about what was on my mind. After carefully considering it for a bit, I decided to go ahead and ask.

“Do you know?” “Yes,” I snapped. “I’m a two-hundred-year-old vampire, Father. Babysitting some impulsive, loud-mouthed –eighteen year old is beneath me. I hate that fucking kid!” Father’s amusement didn’t fade. If anything, his smile widened, his eyes crinkling at the corners like he was enjoying this far too much. “Hate, you say?” he asked, his tone light, teasing. “Care to elaborate? What’s got my centuries-old son so riled up about a mere mortal?”
