For a fraction of a second longer than it should have, as if reluctant to let the reflection's owner leave.
As his hand touched the door handle, he glanced back one last time. “Good luck with your monsters, little one. You’re going to need it.”
The door creaked open, and as the figure stepped out, the one in the mirror dissolved into smoke. The room was suddenly engulfed by a violent gust of wind that swirled through the air, scattering papers and all.
The wind spiraled upward, vanishing into the ceiling with a sound like a distant wail. Then, all was silent once more. Save for the soft rustle of the diary’s pages, as though an unseen hand was still reading.
