The novels, especially 'A Study in Scarlet', can feel dated with those long digressions into Mormon history. The short stories are snappy, showcase the classic deduction scenes, and let you sample Conan Doyle's style without a huge commitment.

I tried to begin with 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' because everyone said it was the best, but it felt weird meeting Holmes and Watson already fully formed. Going back to the early shorts afterwards gave me a better appreciation for how their dynamic was built. The publication order purists have a point for completeness, but for sheer enjoyment and avoiding early drag, the Adventures and Memoirs collections first worked for me.
