As he read through, the sage watched with a furrowed brow, occasionally offering explanations and translations of the more obscure passages. Nathan's mind spun with the implications of what he was reading - spells and incantations, invocations of powerful entities and dangerous rituals.

The scent of burning sage filled the air. She sat in her usual chair by the fire, a thick shawl draped around her shoulders. Her milky, unseeing eyes turned towards me as though she could sense exactly where I stood. “I would never abandon you, old woman. You know that,” I said with a grin, leaning against the doorframe.

Ambrosia POV: This morning I woke up earlier than everyone else, I showered and dressed in black tights because I knew what I would be doing today. I braided my hair back tightly and walked down to the basement, I wanted to spend a little time with my siphon to see if I could somehow connect with it a little more. While I was walking through the basement my mind was trailing off. "What do you think Sage? You've been a little quiet through all of this." I said through our link. "Well I have been doing research of my own." Sage replied. "What do you mean you have been doing research on your own?" I asked. "Sit down next to your siphon and close your eyes." Sage grunted. Gudrun throws some herbs into the fire, leaning forward to breathe in the smoke. When I walk over, she hands me the pouch and I reach in taking a handful of herbs. I recognise sage and yarrow. And in my head I go through their magical properties. They are cleansing and calming the nerves and they will ground us. I close my eyes imagining how smoke will engulf my nerves. After a few seconds I feel my mind opening up to the surroundings and I hear the fire singing to me. I open my eyes repeating the words Gudrun had said, then I throw the herbs into the fire. I breathe in the spicy smoke. When I open my eyes I feel how it calms me and makes me more focussed.

She then set the herb bundle alight too, letting it smoulder for a minute before she blew the flames out. The brunette slowly started to walk around the tree, wafting the sage around, reciting a purification spell as she did so “Smoke of Sage , purify and cleanse this tree of any and all bad energies”. Sage scented smoke curled around the tree and where it landed on the blood stains, they glowed briefly and then vanished. Lena buried the sage at the base, blew out the candles and popped them into her bag. She shouldered it and walked away from the former crime scene.

When they finished with the candle, the old woman secured it in a holder and moved toward the bag of dried leaves. “This is called sage, ‘tis for balancing the energies,” she explained. “The Indians like to lay claim on it but we been using it back in the old country since the beginning of time. Ya can grow it in the garden. Now stand before me nice and straight with your arms out to your sides.”
