I place my palm against its trunk and close my eyes, hoping to feel the stories it holds, the quiet truths trees always remember. But there's nothing. No warmth. No comfort. It reminds me of my mother and of how she would whisper little enchantments over the animals we would heal.

The air was thick with bad smells and the strong scent of old herbs and bubbling mixtures. The flame in the room cast strange shadows on the stone wall. In the middle of the room, Sage lay on a straw mat, hurt and battered. Sage was in agony. A burning pain filled his entire body, like his bones were on fire from the inside. He took short, difficult breaths, each one making a soft rasping sound. His eyes were closed, too heavy to open.

Fire burnt everywhere as Indiva sat cross-legged in front of a huge pyre. Slowly, she added a few herbs to the roaring fire in front of her and continued to chant under her breath. The herbs sizzled loudly as they burnt and with the fire reflecting in her eyes, Indiva added sage to the fire and then oil.

As she blew out the flames, the smoke circled around her and she walked from room to room while she fanned the smoke. “Be gone you all. It’s time to leave and go wherever you mortals go.
