Gudrun throws some herbs into the fire, leaning forward to breathe in the smoke. When I walk over, she hands me the pouch and I reach in taking a handful of herbs. I recognise sage and yarrow. And in my head I go through their magical properties. They are cleansing and calming the nerves and they will ground us. I close my eyes imagining how smoke will engulf my nerves. After a few seconds I feel my mind opening up to the surroundings and I hear the fire singing to me. I open my eyes repeating the words Gudrun had said, then I throw the herbs into the fire. I breathe in the spicy smoke. When I open my eyes I feel how it calms me and makes me more focussed.

She then set the herb bundle alight too, letting it smoulder for a minute before she blew the flames out. The brunette slowly started to walk around the tree, wafting the sage around, reciting a purification spell as she did so “Smoke of Sage , purify and cleanse this tree of any and all bad energies”. Sage scented smoke curled around the tree and where it landed on the blood stains, they glowed briefly and then vanished. Lena buried the sage at the base, blew out the candles and popped them into her bag. She shouldered it and walked away from the former crime scene.

When they finished with the candle, the old woman secured it in a holder and moved toward the bag of dried leaves. “This is called sage, ‘tis for balancing the energies,” she explained. “The Indians like to lay claim on it but we been using it back in the old country since the beginning of time. Ya can grow it in the garden. Now stand before me nice and straight with your arms out to your sides.”

He stepped forward, his eyes knowing and keen, his long robes brushing the floor. With a calm yet authoritative voice, Sage commanded, "Place her on the sacred bed." Without hesitation, Rolan laid Mara down gently where Sage had instructed. Rolan straightened, enquiries blazing in his eyes. His voice was angry and frantic for answers as he enquired, "What's going on with her?" At first, Sage remained silent. He simply nodded and gestured for them to take a step back. He extended his palms out towards the burning candles and whispered, "Give me a moment," his eyes closing in concentration. "I need to speak with the land's gods and the moon goddess."

I could smell the lavender and sage from here. It was beautiful. Bigger than the one the children had used earlier, this one felt… ceremonial. A priestess in pale silver robes approached the pyre. Her presence sent a hush over the crowd. She bowed her head and raised her arms, palms glowing faintly with moonlight. “We honor the Moon Goddess with fire,” she intoned, “And with the symbols of what we release—and what we become.”

He declined to answer me and got up walking over to Sage, “You’re troubled about something?” Her hand was rested on the ground as her head was trying to pick a direction to focus. She looked up daring to give him the most sour expression she could muster with her clenched teeth and fists tight with white knuckles, “What is this forest?” Shrugging he backed up and looked down at his feet as he danced more confidently than I had ever seen Sage dodging the sticks, roots, and stones that littered the ground. “You’ll get it, almost there. I can hear the fire in your mind burning.”

“It's sage. I'm cleansing negative energy. This house is practically marinated in it.” He stared at the swirling smoke. “You know what else gets rid of bad energy? Moving out.” I ignored him. “You could use a little cleansing, too. Want me to waft some toward that cold, unforgiving soul of yours?” He crossed his arms. “Pass. If I wanted to be smoked like a Christmas ham, I’d go visit my mother.” The sage popped in the fire, letting out a puff so thick it made him cough too. I smirked. “See? That’s your bitterness trying to escape.”
