I was not interested in the book she was reading but in remembering how invested she was in the book that she did not even notice me coming behind her, maybe talking about the book might help her to relax. “What’s the book about,” I took my eyes off her to look at the book as I turned it around in my hand. “It is about all supernatural creatures that’s ever walked the earth,”

Kathrena and I could fill him in, anyway. And I couldn’t deny that the book was interesting, despite the fact that most of it had gone straight over my head. It spoke of the supernatural in a way that made it seem brilliant, and beautiful, and it was a viewpoint I’d never considered before. I’d seen it – and myself – as dark and mysterious, a slimy underbelly that permeated all that was light and good in the world. But the witch made it seem like magic, and, to her, I supposed that it was.
