Lylah felt like she had been gut-punched. The familiar nickname, once a term of endearment, now sounds like a cruel taunt. It was like Raj had reached into her chest and squeezed her heart. Lylah's mind reeled as memories came flooding back. Memories of laughter, tears, and whispers in the dead of night. Memories of a love that had promised forever, but had ultimately betrayed her. She felt a lump form in her throat as she struggled to contain her emotions. Her eyes pricked with tears, but she refused to let them fall. Not in front of Raj.

She wished that she could say that she was getting used to the pain, but it seemed whenever she found a level of comfort, Rhett would find a new and painful spot. “I am done with the outline,” he said, leaning back and setting the tattoo gun down on the plastic wrapped tray. “I’ll just apply the ointment and bandages…” She sighed in relief and rose from the chair, stretching out and rolling her head on her neck as he went to the bathroom and rummaged in the drawers before returning. She felt his breath on her skin as he smoothed the ointment over the tattoo, his pride in his artwork tainted by his misery. The characters were rendered in the most ancient, wild cursive form of script, like an old, binding sigil. My fingers trembled as I touched it. “When did you… get this?” Henry caught my hand and rubbed it gently against his palm. “Last night, after you fell asleep.” “Did it hurt?” “It was better that it hurt.” His eyes darkened, and a satisfied smile curved his lips.

It reminded me of myself. He smiled sadly—pain hidden beneath it. Dad had hurt him deeply too. "Adrian, painting isn’t a sin. Dad is unreasonable and doesn’t care about feelings. He never bonded with me. It’s sad he can’t bond with you. You want my advice? Do what you love or you’ll lose it. You can’t please him at the cost of your light. Paint all you want. She halted mid sentence and fixed her eyes on my neck, like she was looking at a once in a lifetime occurrence. “What? What's it?” The moment the question left my lips, I felt a familiar and unwelcome sting on my tattoo and my hand flew to it immediately. “Your tattoo, it was glistening, I’ve never seen that happen before” She pulled my hand away from my neck to lol at it again. Just then, I felt another sting and I covered it again with my palm and rubbed it as if that had ever worked to stop the stings. “Does it hurt you often?” She asked with concern lacing her light brown orbs.

"No. You see, when we were done with the tattoo today and Mandy and I were in the back room, getting everything ready for my nipples, I was kind of, ah, afraid. And she kept going on how the pain is not that bad, just like a harder pinch that's over within a few seconds, and, you know me, of course I had to blurt out that I know I can take a lot more than just a few moments of pinching. I think she was still grinning knowingly when she told me to raise my arms so she could place the marks for the needle symmetrically, and I was still rambling when she took it out of the sterile wrapping - and then it was all over, really not more than a pinch, it was nearly disappointing.
