I enjoy not being roasted like a marshmallow.” Lia tilted her head. “You’d make a terrible marshmallow.” I sat up and pointed at her. “That is not the takeaway here, Lia!” Colby smirked. “I think it is.” Matt leaned back, clearly enjoying himself. “You’d be one of those tiny, sad, half-melted marshmallows that gets stuck at the bottom of the hot cocoa.” Jesse nodded. “Or the one that falls into the fire and burns up instantly.” I groaned. “Oh my god, stop comparing me to tragic marshmallows!”

“Aw, you shouldn’t have, Officer Marsh…” Marsh. The weirdo's name is Marsh. As in Marsh potatoes, after the proposing impact of my punch. “…Is that your mama’s recipe or just leftovers from the dumpster out back?” Jordan's tone was enough to make Marsh's jaws tightened, his left eye twitching. Marsh glared through the slot in the door. “Still got that smart mouth, Vex. You’ll swallow it along with your tongue one day.” Jordan winked. “Swallowing has never been a problem, sir. I smiled and abruptly rummaged in his bag, hoping that I might see the letter earlier. "Where's the letter?" He looked at me, reluctantly. "I already threw it earlier." He answered deadpanned. But I continue digging in his bag and I smiled as I saw a large pack of marshmallows on his bag. "I bet that one is better!" I saw a curve in his lips. As of now, I actually could not trade it for anything. I mean, I would rather be working out every day than not be able to eat at least one marshmallow every day. He really knows my favorite.

Amaris felt like everyone in the last few days had been talking in riddles. “That was it? Did he say what Lyle needed to tell you? Hey yours is on fire. I hope you like burned marshmallows.” Anna said sarcastically. She knew that Amaris did not like them burned at all. When they were little the two of them used to have contests to see who could make the most perfectly toasted marshmallow without burning it. “Can’t remember the last time I had these.” The sweet smell of sugar toasting soon mixes with the smoky air. My marshmallow blisters at the edges, gooey and golden, and Jace smashes it between two chocolate squares and a cracker. I slide it off the stick with my fingers and take a bite. Delicious. Jace taps the empty soda bottle against his knee, chewing on his uncooked marshmallows. “Man, we can’t just sit here like we’re eighty. Charred hot dogs, sticky wings, corn dripping with butter. And of course, marshmallows burning black because people refused to be patient. Conversation picked up, easy and scattered. "I know, I'd just rather eat a lettuce wrap. And hey, you were right, it does taste really good. The avocado is fresh." Tarra removes the paper folded around her sandwich and takes a bite, not removing the bread. "I know, right? Anyways, tell me. I'm dying for details on how your night with Marshmallow went and also how your cop-a-feel training was. So, spill." In between eating the rest of our food, I tell Tarra about the training and my night with Drew. And after a few coughs, and chokes of food, she lets out a dramatic gasp. "Say what?
