He was seated near the hearth, a book in his lap, but I could tell by the way he stared at the fire that he hadn’t been reading. “Emily,” he said, without looking at me. “Alpha.” He set the book down slowly. He looked at Stefani, then laid his fork down. “It was busy,” he said slowly. “I had a lot of meetings today, some important decisions to make.”

Jacob declared, then he took his leave, not bothering to return to his office. Knowing that John was alone with Stephie didn't sit well with him. He had been waiting for an opportunity such as this, so he could see her again. And with Carter on his tail about being a better company, Jacob was ecstatic to prove to Stephie that her goodbye had truly been a fever dream.
