A moment later, she returns, leading the four-year-old into the room.
Edward clings to her hand at first, his wide eyes scanning the unfamiliar faces. But when he sees me, he lets go and runs to my side.
“Edward,” I say, crouching down to his level. “This is your grandfather, Mommy's father, James.”
James’s stern expression softens slightly as he kneels, opening his arms.
“Come here, boy.”
Edward hesitates but eventually steps forward. James scoops him up, setting him on his knee.
