Emma opened it to find the first proof copy of her book: A Love That Lingers. The cover was simple an image of snow falling on a wooden cabin but the title gleamed in silver letters. Her name below it felt unreal. Jake walked in, took one look at the book, and grinned. “It’s real. You’re an author.” Emma ran her fingers over the pages, stunned. “It still feels like someone else’s story.” Jake wrapped his arms around her. “But it’s yours. Every word. Every scar and victory. You earned this.” Later that night, Emma curled up by the fire, book in hand, Lila asleep upstairs. She read the final page aloud to herself:

Jayce whispered, “And we burned.” BOOK ONE COMES TO AN END

JANE I heard the words leave my mouth before I could stop them. "It's only fair to end this with a little bit of crass, is it not?" His eyebrows went up. Interest flickered across his face. I stood, tucking the bills into my purse with deliberate slowness. Five hundred dollars. That was textbooks and maybe even groceries that weren't ramen. My hands weren't shaking anymore. I was Jailbird now. Fully Jailbird. Jane Puckett was locked away somewhere safe.

Then Ethan left, saying, "Don't worry, I'll make sure those who hurt you pay for what they've done!" Hurt me? What was he talking about? I was confused. I thought everything had already been settled. Who could possibly hurt me? Later that night, when I saw the new trending topic, I almost spat out blood. [Emma White Plagiarism!] Someone accused me of stealing designs, claiming Ethan had leaked confidential information from Kipper Group to me. They said we had plotted together to sabotage their designs. It was so ridiculous. Completely absurd. I refreshed the page, and by then, the trending topics had changed.

I laugh at the clever word play. "Can we go in there?" I plead. Jack looks to where I'm pointing, "Of course." He smiles at me. I smile super hard and stare at the adventure ahead of me. We walk in and I look at a ton of cooking books, dog calendars and more. There's a book there called, Dear Nobody. It's a true story about a girl named, Mary Rose, who has to deal with her drug addiction and boys. The book interests me. I show Jack. "Out of every book in this store, you choose the one about an addict?" Jack raises his eyebrows. I shrug.

My grip tightened slightly around the edge of the page. Lana still hadn’t spoken to me. She said she would… when I told her the truth. Normally, when we fought, we got over it almost immediately.

She was nuts, but her words were unbeatable. She opened the door in a tank top and fuzzy slippers, blinking like she hadn’t slept since last winter. “Nora,” she said flatly. “You bring drama?” “I brought a Luna.” Janie stared at Lira for a long second, then stepped aside. “Well, hell.
