Tomorrow I would have had the day off from work, and I wanted to rest to better prepare for the busy weekend of work, but apparently, something in my head was whirling, preventing me from falling asleep. I sighed again, closing my eyes and holding a hand to my chest, over my heart. Something was wrong, something was wrong. But what was it? Why did I feel that tremendous anguish? Why did I feel my heart beating frantically and a bite clenched in my stomach? What was going on? Another roar rang in the sky, frightened me, and I heard a knock at the door. I pulled myself up and looked at the door of my room with a frowning forehead. Maybe I had dreamed it.

The sharp sound of shattering glass jolted me awake. My heart slammed against my ribcage, a frantic rhythm that echoed in my ears as I jolted upright. The once quiet room was now thick with an unsettling stillness, the kind that made the hairs on the back of my neck rise. Shadows stretched across the walls, shifting with the faint flicker of the streetlights filtering through the partially drawn curtains. Each breath I took was uneven, shuddering past my lips as my chest rose and fell in rapid succession.

Fear washes over me as it lunges toward me. “AARRGGHH!” I scream as I wake myself. Sitting up in bed I pinch my brow, another nightmare. My dreams have been erratic lately. I’m not sure why but it’s getting exhausting. I lay back down trying to calm my racing heartbeat. Beep beep beep and there’s my alarm. 7am, right on time.

Maybe my going limp had bored him temporarily. I couldn’t even feel my heart beating anymore; it’d risen to a tempo that felt more like the juddering vibration of a poorly tuned motor. My hands shook. My whole body had gone damp and clammy. I stared out into the night. Something rustled in the darkness. And something broke in my brain.

I sat in the room full of darkness hearing the ticking of the clock in the distance which also matched my heartbeat. Not just once it nor twice it just became the daily routine of mine. Waiting for you as the day turns into the night, either you locked yourself in the basement or out of the house.

Battery fricking low. I placed my head on the wheel, glancing at the blank screen. 'What do I do now? I need to get home early because of Aurora, and besides, this road isn't even safe at night ' Not with all the horrible tales of illegal activities I've heard going on here at night. Raising my head, I grabbed a spanner from under the chair, unlocked the door, and got out of my car. I opened the bonnet, my eyes tracing the car's engine.

I sit at the foot of my bed, brushing my knuckles with the pad of my thumb as my hand clenches onto the fingers of my other hand nervously. My leg jumps, the heel of my foot tapping against the carpet floor beneath me. My heart hasn’t quite caught up with the stillness of this moment, its rapid beats a testament to the fear and uncertainty that clings to my like a second skin.

My ear was pressed against his heart and I could hear it beating erratically, like he was running several miles in a minute. I didn’t know what to make of that, so I just stayed put until I drifted off to sleep.

Running has become my habit. It grounds me, reminds me of monsters chasing me. My thoughts are erratic mess and so is my breathing when I step out the car. My unstable steps stumble me forward many times if it isn’t for the kind guard who stabilises me. I stand in front of our porch, catching my breath, steadying myself and press a shaky hand to my heart. Stop beating so loudly. Please, I can’t handle it. It’s too much. It’s confusing how my heart’s palpitations grow even stronger and out of beat as if it wants to escape through my chest and fall on the ground waiting for someone to step on it and crush it, so that it’d stop beating.

The whimpering sound echoed in Darcy’s head, and he woke with a start. He flashed his eyes open and sat up, his palm against his chest, feeling the continuous thumping of his beating heart. Thump! Thump! Thump! Oh, God! It was painful.
