He stepped into a pool of weak light filtering through a broken skylight. He looked terrible. His hair was greasy and unwashed. His clothes were rumpled. His eyes were bloodshot and wild, like an animal backed into a corner. But what made my breath catch was the small bundle in his arms.

Footsteps echoed—slow, deliberate, confident. Adrian clenched his fists. “Show yourself.” A shadow detached from the far end of the hallway, tall and lean, moving with elegance that seemed almost inhumanly serene. When he walked into the faint light, Jason’s face came into view—smooth, expressionless, calm in a way that made him infinitely more terrifying than any snarling monster. Jason stopped several meters away, hands in his pockets as if he were simply strolling through a hotel on a lazy morning. “Adrian Miller,” he said in a quiet tone that sent a cold ripple down the hall. “I came for the girl.”
