The Rip
Gabe felt the hair rise on his arms.
A single swell rose far out beyond the break. It didn’t tumble with the wind; it gathered—deliberate, steady, like a back drawing breath.
Frank glanced at Gabe, gave him the softest nod, and turned back to the sea. He lifted his voice, shoulders squaring, the stole snapping like a pennant.
“Dominus fortitudo mea, et refugium meum…”
The wind sharpened; a shadow slid under the water. From the breakline, a new wave reared—massive, too smooth, like glass pulled up by unseen hands. Gabe could feel the charge in the air, a prickle at his teeth, a taste like batteries.
