"What do you think about the note?" I tried to see his reaction. A slight clue would give him away. He stared at the note for a long time. "One thing's definitely clear." I arched a brow. "And what's that?" "This killer, whoever that he is..." he trailed off to create more suspense. "He is pretty bad at poetry." And I almost threw a knife at him. "It says you're lying. What are you lying about, Jack?" Jack looked outside the window, his eyes staring at a distance. "It says that I'm lying about not having committed those murders."

Then her eyes flicker…past him…landing on me. “Cody…” My name breaks out of her like something fragile, barely holding together. My mind lags, trying to process if I even saw what I think I saw. Jack steps forward again, fists raised. “I didn’t…” she starts, her voice shaking, her breath uneven. She swallows hard, forcing the words out. “I didn’t kill her,” she says to Jack. Then her gaze flicks back to me, and for a split second, something else flashes in her eyes…

For a fleeting second, hope claws at me—maybe the guard was wrong, maybe he’s only resting, maybe— But then I see his eyes. Not the emerald green I share with him, not the fierce fire I grew up both fearing and yearning for. His eyes are white. Empty. A ghost’s stare. Dark smoke coils around his head like a crown of poison. His skin is pale, stretched thin, the color of ash. “No…” My voice cracks in the air, raw and desperate.
