She had watched him disappear into the study. Now she saw him emerge, his face pale and his shoulders tense. A faint smile crossed her lips. "So... you've seen it," she murmured. Her phone vibrated. It was a message from Vanessa. How's everything going? Chloe typed a short reply. Phase Two has begun. A few moments later, another message arrived. Don't push too hard. This could get dangerous. Chloe looked toward the study door before locking her phone. "Sometimes," she whispered to herself, "people reveal who they truly are when they're afraid."

"Who's the girl you took along with you to Bloom Bazaar?"

He seems to be having a pretty good time. "Mind if I sit with you then?" As always, Jojo is the picture of politeness. "Sure," I scooch over, and he settles next to me. His eyes are on two dark-haired girls who couldn't be older than seven, climbing the jungle gym. "Cute kids," I comment, enjoying the way they're hanging off the monkey bars. "They are, aren't they?" Jojo beams. "My girlfriend wants kids one day. She'll be a really good mom."
