My gateway was 'The Gravedigger’s Daughter'. It’s a historical novel that follows a Jewish immigrant family, and it just swept me away. The protagonist’s struggle to reshape her identity in the face of relentless trauma is heartbreaking and utterly gripping.

Oates has a way of making historical fiction feel urgently present, and this book is a prime example. It’s epic in scope but never loses the intimate, visceral connection to its main character. After this, I felt ready to tackle her more structurally ambitious works because I already trusted her completely with character and narrative momentum. It’s a masterpiece that doesn’t get mentioned as often as some others.

Her early novel 'With Shuddering Fall' features a young woman, Karen, who runs away with a violent stock car driver. The entire novel is a journey into her masochistic obsession and the tumultuous, self-destructive inner world it creates. It's a raw, almost primal look at a certain kind of female desire that embraces annihilation, which Oates explores without judgment but with intense psychological clarity.

My advice? Read one of her novels and then immediately read one of her short story collections. The novel shows her depth and endurance; the short stories show her precision and lethal efficiency. Together, they give you the full picture. Maybe pair 'Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart' with 'The Female of the Species'. You'll see how the same concerns—love, violence, destiny—play out over 400 pages and then over 20. It's a masterclass in form.
